For a year in the late-1990s, I traveled throughout India and into Nepal to talk to weavers and dyers about the survival and transformation of traditional textile arts, afterwards working in New Delhi’s Handlooms and Handicrafts Museum to catalogue its collection of Oriyan saris.  This research was generously funded by the US Government FLAS fellowship and other organizations.

This collection of images document these encounters with textile artisans and their families, and other moments along the journey.
